“Smooth” Loving

Just when we think we’re springing into warmer weather, this happens:

Naturally, with a forecast like this, it can be easy to be feel lethargic. It’s even easier to dig into comfort foods (chips and brownies, anyone?). Maybe even more challenging than our weekly wellness this week is keeping a sunny mindset despite the situation outdoors. Read on for a quick and simple rememdy.

Probably one of the top foods that’s reminiscent of nicer weather is fresh fruit. Unfortunately, fruit alone won’t give you the amount of calories or protein necessary when you need to grab a quick meal. Luckily, smoothies are an excellent stand-in and available virtually anywhere! So far this week I’ve tried two new varieties, one homemade and one store-bought.


I actually have our very own Chelsea to thank for the above creation, as she posted the recipe for this smoothie last friday. Highlights: It can be made the night before, tastes like a blueberry muffin and most of the ingredients keep for a couple of months at least (meaning  you can definitely buy ahead without wasting any food). The prep? Three minutes to throw together the night before and only waking up my roommates blending in the A.M. to be out the door.

The second is from….Starbucks! Or Fivebucks, depending on how liberally you spend there. This smoothie was the perfect answer to my 3-hour group meeting earlier in the week. At 16 ounces, it’s not only the perfect size, but the perfect smoothie as well. Stats on the Mango-Orange:

Ingredients: orange-mango juice, a whole real banana, whey protein & fiber powder and ice. Not too many secret ingredients here!

Nutrition: 260 calories, 2 grams fat, 52 grams carbohydrates, 5 grams fiber and a whopping 15 grams of protein.

Room for improvement: the 34 grams of sugar.

Weekly Wellness Check-in: I can proudly report that not only did I exercise 6 days last week, but I managed to keep to my water requirements too (unheard of for me). So far, I’ve been getting at least 7 hours of sleep, but feeling that my personal needs are somewhere closer to the 9 hour mark.
